Top15: Most Anticipated Movies of 2019

2018 is over and I can’t help but feel a bit disappointed in the end. Even though I missed a lot of movies, none of the ones I watched was worthy of an A+, turning 2018 into the first year where I didn’t give my top rating to a film.

However, 2019 is already here and looking at its upcoming movies, I have to be not only hopeful but certain that I am going to absolutely love what can be one of the best years in recent cinema history!

This is a pretty straight-forward opinion piece. Having in mind my own personal taste and hype surrounding this new year’s films, I put together a list with 15 of my most anticipated movies of 2019. Now, before you go all crazy on me, let me clarify: this is NOT a list with the movies that I think will be the best of the best. It is a collection of films which I am extremely excited to watch, either due to being following its cinematic universe or franchise since its beginning or because I am a fan of the specific genre’s characteristics.

So, with no further ado, here are my most anticipated movies of 2019!

15. Spider-Man: Far From Home

I strongly believe that Tom Holland portrays the best on-screen Spider-Man to date, so I can’t help to be highly excited for Homecoming’s sequel, especially since it is after Avengers: Endgame.

14. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

First Quentin Tarantino movie since 2015’s The Hateful Eight. Stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, and Margot Robbie. I don’t think I have to explain myself…

13. Alladin

Disney remakes have been incredibly successful (even though some people don’t really like this new “let’s remake every movie we made” plan), so I am genuinely expecting a fun and entertaining journey through nostalgia (with a wonderful Will Smith as the Genie).

12. X-Men: Dark Phoenix

It could be a little higher in my list, but the constant delays have me worried. Still, the X-Men saga is one of my all-time favorites and I can’t wait to see what a renovated cast can bring to the table (go Sophie Turner)!

11. Toy Story 4

Disney is taking a lot of risks by bringing back to life such a beloved and critically-acclaimed franchise like Toy Story, but having the original cast back should get this fourth installment on track for yet another major success.

10. Godzilla: King of the Monsters

I mean, it’s freaking Godzilla! Of course I am pumped to watch this beautiful-looking monster-action flick. All Hail Gojira!

9. It: Chapter Two

I loved the first It and I can’t wait to see what Andy Muschietti will come up with for the sequel. Pennywise is definitely an unique horror character and its potential is huge.

8. Captain Marvel

Honestly, I didn’t expect an unknown character (MCU-wise, of course) to have such a tremendous impact in the plan to defeat Thanos… The fact is that Brie Larson and co. have my full attention and I am very hopeful that Marvel will successfully add a female-lead film to its cinematic universe.

7. Us

Jordan Peele’s Get Out surprised me so much that I have no idea what he can bring to the horror genre… And that’s exactly what captivates me the most: the unknown potential of such a remarkable director.

6. Alita: Battle Angel

I know that this movie has a big probability of it being a flop. However, James Cameron is a master producer and both the story and visuals look amazingly captivating. So much that I’m highly anticipating this one.

5. Joker

It’s true that the DCEU lacks consistency, but DC Comics as its own released one of the best trilogies of all-time (The Dark Knight). Joker is one of the most complex villains ever and I think Joaquin Phoenix will nail his part. Let’s hope the story doesn’t let me down…

4. Glass

M. Night Shyamalan is one of my favorite directors and when Split revealed that it belonged to a 16-year trilogy of superheroes, I knew he was back. Glass has everything to be one of the best superhero films ever, just like Unbreakable already is.

3. Avengers: Endgame

Yes, I am part of those people who didn’t quite enjoy Infinity War’s ending due to the knowledge of future films, which partially ruins the perfectly-executed cliffhanger. Still, it is impossible not to be tremendously excited with the end of an era that marked entire generations.

2. Star Wars: Episode IX

Speaking of fan-favorite sagas, Star Wars ends its new trilogy with the return of J.J. Abrams to direct what I hope will be a phenomenal ending to a divisive set of movies. I belong to the group who loves both Force Awakens and The Last Jedi, so obviously I expect Episode IX to deliver as well.

1. The Lion King

There is absolutely no way this movie will fail on delivering one of Disney best films to date. Yes, it’s a remake… So what?! The original cast is back and the animation looks stunning. Jon Favreau has literally everything to produce a masterpiece. If The Lion King is remotely close to the original’s level, there is no competition for 2019’s number one!
